Ode to My Scale
Ode to My Scale is a body of work that’s been deeply informed by my 10-year journey of recovery from an eating disorder. As I’ve navigated my recovery, I’ve had to rebuild my relationship with everyday objects—clothing, food, numbers and the space I occupy in relation to them. Many of the pieces utilize soft ground etching as a way to transform the remnants of my past. This technique allows me to take pieces of clothing that no longer fit me and use them as textures in my work, turning physical remnants of my past into new expressions of healing and transformation. These materials, once symbols of discomfort, are recontextualized and repurposed to tell a story of healing and self-reclamation. Through this process, I explore themes of isolation, recovery, and the complexities of reimagining one’s connection to their body and the world. Ode to My Scale serves as a way to physically engage with these experiences and offer a sense of solidarity to others who may be navigating similar journeys, showing that, though it’s not linear, healing is possible.
